THOUSANDS DEAD OR INJURED AND 6,000 PEOPLE HOMELESS IN PAPAU NEW GUINEA AFTER GIANT TIDAL WAVE HITS

On the night of July 17, a 23-foot wave, known as a tsunami, slammed into six coastal villages in Papau New Guinea, 90 miles north of Australia.

People were tossed into trees, hurled into the rushing waters, or crushed beneath debris. Many who survived have severe fractures, open wounds and respiratory problems from ingesting sea water into their lungs. Even those who were not injured are at severe risk because of contaminated water supplies and the risk of disease.

MAP International has already responded with Travel Packs for medical missionaries on their way to help. Other Christian agencies are looking to MAP to provide medicines and supplies for their relief efforts.
