MAP INTERNATIONAL COORDINATES RELIEF EFFORTS WITH RED CROSS/RED CRESCENT

Brunswick, GA: MAP International is responding with emergency medical assistance to the victims of the massive earthquake which struck western Turkey early Tuesday. Initial plans include the delivery of three Emergency Health Kits (NEHK), two for the International Red Cross and one consigned to the American Hospital in Istanbul.

The medicine and supply contents of the NEHK have been designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with other field active international relief agencies. Each kit contains pain relievers, topical and oral antibiotics, trauma care products (such as surgical scissors, gauze, gloves, elastic bandaging, etc.), as well as water purification tablets and numerous other essential medical supplies. Each kit is designed to treat 10,000 people for approximately three months.

MAP is coordinating with OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs), American Red Cross, International Red Cross/Red Crescent Federation, as well as partner agencies in the field to provide the requested, essential medicines and medical supplies for ongoing treatment needs.

MAP’s director of relief, along with a medical doctor, will travel to Turkey on August 25^th to conduct assessment of additional needs and monitor current distribution. They will hand deliver more than 400 pounds of medicines and supplies to government authorities and church contacts in Istanbul.
