Organizations, such as schools or clubs, purchase scrip (gift certificates) from stores such as supermarkets to department and specialty shops. These stores rebate a percentage of the face value of the scrip to the organization. The scrip is sold at face value which is where the profit is generated. The buyers use the scrip to pay for their purchases exactly as they would with money. The stores do this because it generates good publicity, helps with cash flow and attracts people who choose to support non-profit civic or religious groups.
