Mentoring Programs
The College Fund is strongly committed to mentoring programs. These programs provide
access to role models and to information about careers and lifetime experiences that often
play a crucial role in the development of young people.
In addition to providing essential advice and information, mentoring relationships help
to build self-confidence and foster personal growth and maturity among students. Moreover,
the mentors participating in these programs gain as much from the students as the students
learn from the mentors.
- Dow Corning Foundation Saturday Science Academies - Through a three-year grant of
$100,000 from the Dow Corning Foundation, UNCF and the Dow Corning Foundation are
establishing a series of Saturday Science Academies utilizing UNCF member institutions as
tutoring centers for students in grades 4-8 focusing on mathematics and science. The
curriculum will concentrate on conducting discipline-oriented experiences in mathematics,
science, communications skills and computer applications. (1997)
- UNCF/Citibank Fellows Program - This program offers scholarship support and
mentoring for outstanding UNCF students. Each fellow is carefully matched with a Citibank
executive. Matches are determined on the basis of background and career interests. Mentors
and fellows maintain frequent contact throughout the students' college years and often
develop close and lasting friendships. (1984)
- UNCF/Mellon Minority Undergraduate Fellowship Program - Students interested in
college teaching careers are identified and provided with a mentor support system designed
to encourage and facilitate participants' work toward graduate study in a Ph.D program.
UNCF faculty service as mentors. Participating students engage in supervised research
arranged by their mentors. Support is provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. (1990)
- UNCF/Toyota Scholarship Program - Scholarship support and a post-junior-year
summer internship are offered to each participant. Toyota assigns a corporate mentor to
each intern to enhance the student's work experience and facilitate adjustment to the
corporate world. (1988)
