TREATIES AND AGREEMENTS IN FORCE

FOR CANADA WITH THE U.S.

ACCESS THE TREATIES

In the spring, 1998, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy, and the U.S. Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, agreed to provide the complete collection of the bilateral treaties of Canada and the U.S. for public access over the internet. The implementation of this agreement is being accomplished jointly at the Library of International Relations, Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, and at the Centre de recherche en droit public (CRDP), University of Montreal.  Treaties have been provided by the Canada Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Each University has converted the documents to electronic formats and provided access to them through the world wide web.

Beginning in 1999, the LIR made the imaged versions of the treaties available on the world wide web directly. The treaties are in a public database that has been part of eLOISe and available through dial-up access to subscribers of the LIR for nearly a decade.
