WELCOME TO THE 1999
CONSULAR BALL

"Hi, this is Sylvia Henry.  On behalf of the 1999 Consular Ball Committee, I want to invite you to join us at this year's Consular Ball, which will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Hilton and Towers on Saturday, October 9."

"Hello, I'm Jeannene Chaudruc.  The special highlight of every Ball is the Grand March of Chicago's Consular Corp.  Each year at the Ball we also present the ReQua International Humanitarian Award."

"This is Nancy Forney.  We hope that you will join us this year for a wonderful evening of ceremony, dining and dancing at the 46th Annual Consular Ball benefitting the Library of International Relations."

The Consular Ball is the only regular event in Chicago to pay tribute to the city's foreign consuls; it has been held each year since 1954. The Library of International Relations, which is housed at the Chicago-Kent College of Law -- Illinois Institute of Technology, Downtown Campus -- sponsors and benefits from the Ball. Proceeds are used to maintain the collection and to support the Library's international programs.
Since 1994, the Consular Ball has been the venue for presenting the Eloise G. ReQua International Humanitarian Award, which is named for the founder of the LIR and honors prominent figures who promote international understanding and cooperation through their work, their art, or their lives. Past recipients of the Award include W. Clement and Jessie Stone, Sir Georg and Lady Solti, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and Adlai Stevenson, III. This year the Library of International Relations is pleased to present the Award to artist John David Mooney.
All in all, the Consular Ball makes for a spectacular event that attracts civic, corporate, academic, diplomatic, and political leaders from Chicago and beyond. Brought together in a setting of tradition and elegance, they gather each year to honor the Consular Corps of Chicago.
