eShare Technologies licenses breakthrough Chat Server to onLive! Technologies, Leader in Web-based Group Communications

eShare Expressions Software Allows OnLive! to Add Text-Based Communication to Voice Conferencing Product Line

HAUPPAUGE, NY, March 11, 1997 — In a further endorsement of eShare Technologies Inc. growing market leadership in chat software, OnLive! Technologies Inc., an acknowledged pioneer in voice communications today announced it is licensing eShare's breakthrough chat technology, eShare Expressions, for incorporation into the new OnLive! text server.

eShare Expressions is the first easy-to-use, cost-effective chat solution that requires no plug-ins or downloads. The product, announced only recently, has already been adopted by Lotus Development Corporation, Sony Music, and Charters Communications Military Networks. This cost-effective chat solution is a natural fit with OnLive!, an acknowledged leader in voice-based communications applications. Under the terms of the agreement, OnLive! will resell its own text-communication product based on eShare Expressions underlying technology.

Researching the market, we found eShare Expressions to be the most easy-to-use, yet advanced technology available, said Betsy Pace, CEO of OnLive! Technologies. We are proud to partner with eShare, whose superior product has positioned them as a proven leader in the text marketplace.

Pace added, We strongly feel that text-based solutions will meet a number of real-time group communication needs in both the Internet and corporate intranet marketplace and look forward to addressing those needs with our newly-expanded product line.

eShare and OnLive! fully complement each other as leading edge developers of breakthrough communications technologies for use in both the corporate and consumer domain, said James Tito, President of eShare.

OnLive! Technologies develops real-time, voice-based conferencing applications for use over the Internet and corporate intranet, offering an alternative to the text-based chat of today through broadband technology. OnLive! Technologies is the market leader in this niche, said Peter Dushkin, an Internet technologies analyst at Jupiter Communications in New York. OnLive! has a client base that includes NEC, MTV, ABC Sports, and ZDTV.

eShare has already enjoyed early adoption of Expressions, a breakthrough product. Lotus Development has deployed Expressions on its innovative Lotusphere Web site (www.lotusphere.com) to encourage and facilitate knowledge exchange and relationship building. Sony Music has incorporated Expressions for its popular Live By Request telecast, to enliven audience participation via the Web (www.livebyrequest.com).

eShare Expressions has been acknowledged by industry commentators as a major step in developing chat as a more effective inclusive technology.

eShare has created a seamless graphical interface that will be compelling to both system administrators and online consumers, said Jupiter Communications Peter Dushkin. eShare's client seamlessly integrates with the browser, avoiding lengthy client downloads and firewall complications (common issues with iChat and IRC).

"The first-generation community chat tools out there aren't geared for mass adoption by the Internet, intranet and extranet markets because they are cumbersome to install and have limited functionality," said Tito of eShare.

Analysts and venture capitalists estimate that the market for chat software will reach $1.5 billion by 2000. Right now, however, the market is in its infancy with first-generation products marked by technical complexity and installation difficulties. The demand for interpersonal communication software such as chat, however, is escalating. Businesses and organizations are seeking ways to achieve greater inclusivity, which would allow them to establish strong customer loyalties, improve employee involvement and cooperation, and reduce decision timeline.

Unlike competing products, eShare Expressions can be installed in minutes — even by non-technical users -- and its chat client requires no client downloads or plug-ins. Also, unlike competing products, the Java-based Expressions chat client operates behind firewalls — a critical feature for corporate acceptance, given that firewalls protect nearly 50% of Internet users. The competitively priced base solution allows simultaneous communication for up to 50 chatters with the possibility of expansion to an unlimited number of people. The eShare Expressions chat client will also be available in HTML and ActiveX versions.

Headquartered in Cupertino, California, OnLive! Technologies is the leader in real-time group communication.
