The Professional Affairs Department is continuing to ensure that teacher education pre-service an in-service programs adequately prepare members of the College to provide quality education. Staff members in the department support two committees of Council -- the Standards of Practice and Education Committee and the Accreditation Committee.

The Standards of Practice and Education Committee has worked with members of the College to develop the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession, which are currently being validated. Work has begun in the development fo Ethical Standards for the teaching profession. This statement is in its early stage and you are encouraged to provide input through this web site.

The committee also seeks your input on another work in progress -- the profession learning framework. When completed, this framework will provide a description of the ongoing teacher education programs recognized by the College.

The work on the standards and the framework provide the foundation for the accreditation of pre-service and in-service teacher education programs in Ontario. The Accreditation Committee also seeks input through involvement of members of the College.

We need your input

Every few weeks, questions are posted on this site. Space is available for you to answer or provide input. Simply type your response in the box and click "submit." We’d also like to know whether you’re a member of the College or not. And, if you’d like a response from us, include your e-mail address.

The College views electronic communication as an important tool. Your input here is extremely valuable. As a research tool, the World Wide Web is in its infancy. We’re working to make the most of this research potential.

Where appropriate, College staff will respond or forward your ideas and suggestions to other College members and groups who have been involved in College activities and have similar interests and concerns. Web sites should be interactive – your contributions will keep ours that way.

Professional Affairs Department Structure

Organizationally, the Professional Affairs Department is headed by Linda Grant. Linda provides co-ordination and management for the department. Within professional affairs are two units: standards of practice and accreditation.

The department's managers are Laura Sheehan in accreditation and Doug Wilson in Standards of Practice and Education.

The standards of practice unit provides program, policy and research support in teacher education to the standards of practice and education committee of the College, and provides support to the development and implementation of a framework to maintain standards of practice and to promote continuing learning among members of the College.

The accreditation unit provides support to the accreditation committee of the College. It establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the accreditation and audit of teacher pre-service and in-service providers and programs.

The Department’s Mandate

The mandate of the professional affairs department is set out in the College of Teachers Act. In part, it says:

  • To accredit professional teacher education programs offered by post-secondary educational institution
  • To accredit ongoing education programs for teachers offered by post-secondary educational institutions and other bodies
  • To provide for the ongoing education of members of the College
  • To establish and enforce professional standards and ethical standards applicable to members of the College
  • To develop, provide and accredit educational programs leading to certificates of qualification additional to the certificate required for membership, including but not limited to certificates of qualification as a supervisory officer, and to issue, amend, suspend, cancel, revoke, and reinstate such additional certificates.
