School - to - Career Glossary

School Based Partnerships

CAREER TALKS - employers and employees visit students in the classroom and explain the work in their industry or company.
Grade Levels: Kindergarten - College & Beyond

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT - work with teachers to integrate curriculum to link adademic and workplace knowledge and skills.
All Grade Levels

TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE - provide educators with information, support, and access to technology to increase their awareness and skill development.
All Grade Levels

CAREER DAYS/CAREER FAIRS - participate in activities designed to help students think about their interest and abilities in relation to potential careers.
Grade Levels: Kindergarten - College & Beyond

ENTREPRENEURIAL PROJECTS - provide expertise as consultants to student-operated businesses.
All Grade Levels

ADVISORY COMMITTEE - a partnership between local business and education for the purpose of sharing their progress, problems and ideas relating to preparing students for life beyond high school.
Grade Levels: Ninth - Twelfth

MOCK INTERVIEWS - an opportunity for students to be interviewed by local business people.
Grade Levels: Seventh - Twelfth

PORTFOLIO PROJECT - a certification project which emphasises "entry level skills readiness" for employment.
Grade Levels: Ninth - Twelfth

EMPLOYABILITY CARD - a program qualifying students for employment based on criteria developed by business.
Grade Levels: Ninth - Twelfth

Work Based Partnerships

WORKPLACE AND INDUSTRY TOURS - students visit the worksite, talk with employees and observe the workplace activities.
Grade Levels: Kindergarten - College & Beyond

INTERNSHIPS - students work for an employer for a specified period of time to learn about a particular industry or occupation.
Grade Levels: Tenth - College & Beyond

MENTORING - an employee will instruct the student, critique the student's performance, and challenge the student to perform well.
Grade Levels: Seventh - College & Beyond

JOB SHADOWING - (student/educator) - a student follows an employee at a company location to learn about a particular occupation or industry.
Grade Levels: Sixth - College & Beyond

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION - students alternate their schooling with a job in a field related to their academic or occupational objectives.
Grade Levels: Tenth - College

JOB ROTATIONS - at a worksite, students transfer among a number of positions and tasks that require different skills and responsibilities.
Grade Levels: Ninth - College

EDUCATOR INTERNSHIPS: provide opportunities for educators to explore an industry or company to develop their knowledge of workplace skill requirements.

APPRENTICESHIP - an opportunity for students to work within their skill area under the guidance of a veteran employee.
