I have the air suspension on my Explorer, do the air shocks wear out like normal shocks? Its not riding well, lots of rebound and mushiness. Also, it seems to float a little over pavement irregularities and expansion joints, classic shock symptoms. Also, is the Air Ride system on the Limited 4 wheel or just rear. I have a feeling its just rear if so, bad front shocks may be my problem. if thats it, I want good non Motorcraft shocks, what do you reccomend. Bias on ride not handling, onroad not offroad performance.------------------ Stephen Withrow StephenLS400@aol.com ------------------ 97 Explorer Limited 4X4 SOHC V6 98 Lexus LS400 [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 03-18-2000).] |

Steph: In my 1995 Explorer brochure it says the Limited 4WD models came standard with 4 corner air shocks. Are there any settings for ride quality? My grandpa's Lincoln has air suspension and the little message center thing can choose Plush, standard, or performance settings for his air shocks. I am assuming the Explorer doesn't happen to have that nice feature. I don't know much about those, but am stabbing in the dark: How much air do you run in your tires? That may cause a bit mushier ride if they are a bit less due to changing weather. I also doubt this would be it, but do you think the suspension bushings may be wearing a little? ALso I remember from my grandpa's car that there is a switch that disables the automatic ride control...maybe that got hit on accident? I'll bet I am way off base, but just my $.02

Thanks for the reply Trav. I thought it was 4 corner but I wasn't sure. The system on the Explorer is engineered from the Air Ride system I had on my 90 and 93 Lincoln Continentals. It dosn't have the adjustable settings like the 95+ Contenentals. It can't be the switch, the message center on mine says "Air Ride Disabled" when the switch is off. My son actually got the "Check Air Ride" warning in it the other morning, so I better have Ford look at it, you just know they'll screw me. ------------------ Stephen Withrow StephenLS400@aol.com ------------------ 97 Explorer Limited 4X4 SOHC V6 98 Lexus LS400 | |
