Simulated soil loss on a 4m flume

The research of the ECI's Land Degradation and Rehabilitation Programme (LDRP) aims at greater understanding of the occurrence, processes and impacts of land degradation - particularly soil erosion by water - in order to enhance mankind's ability to tackle the resulting environmental problems.
The above image shows simulated soil erosion on a 4 m long flume; for comparison, the real pattern of soil loss on the same flume is shown below. The simulation was carried out by the RillGrow 2 model, which is now nearing completion as part of Rill initiation by overland flow and its role in modelling soil erosion. Funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC GR3/11417), this project is joint with the University of Leicester and runs during 1998-99. Its aim is to develop a methodology for predicting the spatial occurrence of erosion on hillslope areas. Click here for more details of RillGrow 2.

Information on the first version of the model is also available. Click here to download RillGrow 1.
