Pork Products

The swine used for products by Rains Natural Meats primarily consist of Tamworth and Tamworth crosses. Tamworths have been known for meat quality and mothering ability since their introduction as a breed. Tamworths were first introduced to the United States in 1882.

Tamworths thrive in the open pasture. A Tamworth mother will build a nest when close to delivery and then use the nest for delivery and to rear their young. The mothers are naturally very  protective of their offspring and will ward off all intruders. This desirable trait coupled with the Tamworth's pure conception rate and rate of pigs weaned make Tamworths the hands down winner in our breeding program.

Tamworths are also known for meat quality. Bacon sold at Rains Natural Meats has more lean strips of muscle in every inch than most commercial meats. Pork chops are more oval with more square inches of meat surface. In these health-conscious times, leanness in a pork product is crucial. The Tamworth breed has the most muscle to fat percentage of body mass.

The color and texture of Tamworth meat is also most desirable. Tamworth meat is not soggy or white like commercially-raised pork. Instead, the meat has a firm consistency and more red color. To us, it makes a more appealing piece of meat.

Rains Natural Meats is currently using a group of boars from the meat producing "Duke." Duke's progeny won the Meats Quality Award at the National Barrow Show twice in two years. That's proof we're doing the right thing with Tamworths.

For all of these reasons, we believe that Tamworths and Rains Natural Meats can give you the best tasting and leanest naturally-raised pork on the market.
