How many hours a week are you willing to work, keeping in mind the tradeoff between work and family time

I'm only 19. But I often think about the tradeoffs between work and family. On one hand, I'm being coerced into a mind frame where salary is the scorecard for success, and salary is dependant, to an extent, on your work ethic. Would you guys ever work more than the 40 hours/week knowing that you're sacrificing family time?

I think money is always second priority to family. Always.

agreed, that in good mind, one must always put family before work, for love is more important than success (financially). but also take into consideration the fact that the family you speak of might very well be dependent on that money and success.

money and happiness is a one-way street. although money is a factor when determining happiness, happiness does not determine money. it is virtually impossible to trade family for money because you will need to raise that family. keep in mind that it is expensive to raise a family. however, money should not be everything because what's the point of earning all that money if you don't spend it on loved ones. definitely, my family is the driving force that makes me go to work everyday.

I agree with Jae. I also like to add that my family travels alot, and that is a huge bonding experience. We also eat out alot, and go to movies and I wear nice clothes, which makes me happy. Money is a huge factor in my family happiness.
