Community Employers Posted Monday, January 03, 2000 STEPS TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE is a Mid State Education District program offering vocational and independent living training in the community for students with disabilities, 18-22 years of age. The success of the Transition Training has been largely due to the positive response from many community employers. Students receive on the job training learning soft skills such as being on time, relating to coworkers, grooming, problem solving, and specific work skills.
The following businesses are providing quality training and opportunities for adults with disabilities.
LARSON BOATS has provided many different job opportunities for adults with disabilities. Students have been employed and also had wonderful job training through mentorships. Mentorships are nonpaid work experiences up to forty hours. A mentor is chosen to teach and model the skills important to their job. Recently 2 students completed successful mentorships, learning job skills and gaining self confidence in the work place.
ST. OTTO'S CARE CENTER: For several years students have had hands on training through their work experience at St. Otto's. Students work two, 2 hour shifts preparing and passing out ice water to the residents. Two students have continued their employment in new fields - one has earned her Certified Nursing Certification and another is employed 20-30 hours per week in Nutrition Services. We are truly proud of these students and thankful for St. Otto's providing a nurturing work environment for adults with disabilities.
ST. GABRIEL'S HOSPITAL: Students have had training experiences in nutrition services and kitchen work.
LITTLE FALLS COMMUNITY SCHOOLS: Most high school students with disabilities have received their initial job training skills through the LF schools. Students have earned minimum wage working in custodial, clerical, or kitchen positions.
COMMUNITY FIRST BANK, ROYALTON STATE BANK, MID MINNESOTA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION: Each year students are employed to shred their confidential documents. Students learn on task skills, how to get along with their coworkers, and how to follow directions from a variety of supervisors.
SUBWAY: A friendly, caring work place has provided a nurturing environment, teaching many of our students life-long work skills.
CHAMPS A & W: Connie looks forward to going to work each day, performing skills she is comfortable doing and learning new skills such as making pizzas or rootbeer floats.
