Superintendent of Schools Jordan Appoints Fiscal Advisors to San Leandro Unified School District
HAYWARD – Alameda County Superintendent of Schools Sheila Jordan announced today the appointment of joint fiscal advisors to ensure the San Leandro Unified School District takes necessary steps to significantly increase its budget reserve and strengthen its fiscal accountability. The action follows recent notification to the district by Jordan that it was not in compliance with the mandated budget reserve of three percent.
The joint fiscal advisors are Alameda County Office of Education’s Associate Superintendent for Business Services Pete Yasitis, and Director for Business and Advisory Services Ifeoma Adams. In making the appointment, Jordan said, "The expertise and experience that Pete Yasitis and Ifeoma Adams have will enable them to provide the monitoring and assistance necessary for the district to resolve its shortfall and develop a long-term plan."
According to Jordan, the advisors will help district staff meet the following requirements: the district must find additional reserve money, review accounting practices, consider instituting new procedures, and develop a revised budget that recalculates revenues and expenditures. The revised budget will be part of a fiscal plan based on a multi-year projection that details how the reserve will be restored.
A revised budget for the district will be announced on or before November 30, 1999. Until that time, the district will operate on the last board-approved budget, which serves as a basis for the authorization of current district expenditures.
The Alameda County Office of Education advocates for best practices in teaching and learning; improves teaching quality by providing continuing education for teachers; forms private and public partnerships to develop increased funding for schools; educates students who have needs not served by districts; and helps school districts ensure fiscal stability.
