Hayward--Sheila Jordan, Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, will give a brief welcome at the Family Chemistry Night, also known as Y2CHEM, a Chemistry Extravaganza geared for students in grades four through eight, on November 9. Because organizers expect a turnout of more than 1,000, and the auditorium only holds 500, Jordan will speak twice–first at 7:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. at the high school auditorium, 800 Magnolia Ave. Piedmont.
Jordan believes that Family Chemistry Night ". . .is a perfect example of parents and teachers creating ways of working and learning. This is the kind of partnership that can make a difference in student achievement. It is a great model that can be used county wide."
In her welcome, Jordan will invite the audience to experience the wonders of science by participating in more than 20 hands-on science experiments and demonstrations held in the middle school gym and multipurpose room. Jordan will also introduce a spectacular chemistry show that will both amaze and educate parents, students, and teachers alike.
Family Chemistry Night is sponsored by the American Chemistry Society, Piedmont Middle School, and the district’s elementary schools and parents’ clubs. In you are interested in hosting this program at your school contact American Chemistry Society Co-chair Alex Madonik at madonika@pebio.com.
