JORDAN ANNOUNCES RECEIPT OF THREE GRANTS TOTALING
$2.5 MILLION FOR COUNTY OFFICE PROJECTSAlameda County Superintendent of Schools Sheila Jordan announced that the Alameda County Office of Education has received three grants totaling $2.5 million for projects focused on Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, academic support for teen parent students, and teacher training.
"The competition for each of these grants was challenging which makes their award doubly rewarding," said Jordan. It speaks well for the caliber of the project content and goals, the high level of collaboration between the county office and the districts, and the commitment of the staff who wrote and will implement the projects."
The county office was awarded a $1.4 million grant covering a five year period to establish a dual immersion bilingual school. The school selected is Burbank Elementary in Hayward and the project is called BRILAR--Burbank Reform for Instruction, Language, Literacy, Achievement and Results. BRILAR is a collaborative effort between the county office and the Hayward Unified School District.
The second grant is for Project Teen Families for $510,000 covering the next three years to establish an academic support program for language minority teen parent students enrolled in the County Office of Education’s Fruitvale Academy High School. The funds will provide tutorial assistance, college preparation, guidance and counseling and technology opportunities for these students, as well as parenting education and early literacy support for their families.
The third grant of $600,000, covering the next three years is for a project called MOTIVATE--Multi-district Organization for Training Integrating Vision and Achievement for Teacher Excellence. MOTIVATE will coordinate the efforts of 19 schools throughout Alameda County to train school teams and provide site-based training to create programs for second language learners. The project will also provide training and support for certification and beyond for administrative and teaching staff working with language minority students.
