ALAMEDA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION TO PARTICIPATE IN
MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

(Hayward, CA) – The Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) is getting into the swing of things as staff participate in this year’s Make a Difference Day, October 23, 1999. Make a Difference Day is a national day of community service and is sponsored by USA Weekend magazine.

Employees of the ACOE are collecting socks and other usable warm clothing to help those in need during the coming winter months. These items will be delivered to four needy shelters in the county. A sock hop is scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at the County Office building 313 W. Winton Ave., Hayward, Room 142, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. 360 Sound will provide music from the 50’s and a swing dance demonstration by students from James Logan High School in Union City will help celebrate the great effort put forth by generous volunteers.

Members of the Service-Learning Youth Committee (SLYC) comprised of students attending school in Alameda County have joined in the effort to Make a Difference Day something meaningful. SLYC is organized to allow these students and others the opportunity to give back to the community and is directed by Evan Goldberg, of the ACOE Grants Resource Center. Members from James Logan, Mt. Eden, Tennyson, Castro Valley, Newark Memorial, the California School for the Deaf and Moreau Catholic High School round out this enthusiastic group of young people. SLYC has pledged to donate 5,000 pairs of socks. Two elementary schools are also on the bandwagon – Markham in Hayward and Alvarado in Union City. Sock hops are also planned at these two school sites. WalMart Stores have graciously donated several hundred pair of socks, as well as undergarments in support of this event.

Make a Difference Day organizer Marie Hagerman is overjoyed by the response of her fellow employees and the students at the various school sites. "It’s wonderful to see so many people take the time to do something for others. I had no idea that the end result could be so monumental!" stated Ms. Hagerman. For more details on how to participate in this event, please call Marie Hagerman at 510/670-4166.
