County Board approves Superintendent’s recommendation to revoke charter of New Village School
HAYWARD, CA -- The Alameda County Board of Education on Tuesday night approved a recommendation by Superintendent of Schools Sheila Jordan to revoke the charter of New Village Public Charter School. The vote was 5 to 2 to revoke the school’s charter, effective June 30.
On January 11, 2000, Jordan had recommended that the board approve continued operation of New Village through the end of the current school year, and review the school’s status in April, to decide if the school would continue operating in the 2000-2001 school year.
After studying a current analysis prepared by the county office Business Services staff and Educational Services staff, the superintendent determined that the New Village Charter School still lacked the resources necessary to operate effectively and safely. In addition, the resignations of all its teaching staff and the director, effective June 30, clearly demonstrate that serious internal problems continue to plague the school.
"We have worked closely with New Village staff and provided them with all the assistance possible, said Jordan. "Unfortunately, the school is still not meeting enrollment and attendance objectives. Its necessarily stringent financial recovery plan continues to have a negative impact on the issues of student safety, health, and the curriculum."
"I regret having to recommend revocation," Jordan added. "I recognize the hard work and commitment of parents and staff."
County Board President Jerome Wiggins, who represents the area in which the New Village School is located, said, "This is not the outcome the board wanted, but we gave New Village every opportunity to succeed. The fact is, running a charter school is a complicated, expensive, time-consuming endeavor. Some charter schools just don’t make it."
