Superintendent of Schools Jordan Issues
Recommendation on Charter for New Village School

(HAYWARD, CA) Superintendent of Schools Sheila Jordan announced today she was giving a qualified recommendation to the Board of Education to allow the New Village Charter School to continue operating through the end of the current school year. Her recommendation includes a proposed review by the Board of the school’s status in April, to decide if the school will continue operating in the following school year.

The recommendation is qualified because the staffing cuts required to reduce fiscal deficits could have a negative impact on student safety. Students could be at risk in an emergency, where sufficient adult help would be needed to help.

The Superintendent’s letter notes that the school’s problems stem from management issues and high staff turnover rather than a lack of funding or resources. The school’s revenue limit base is tied to Berkeley’s, which is the sixth highest in the county (of 18 districts), and is higher than the statewide average.

In Superintendent Jordan’s letter to the Board of Education (attached), she notes the Board’s adoption of her recommendation would give the county office time to determine if the school can demonstrate its capacity to maintain its current and projected budget levels. It would also allow for a full review of the school’s curriculum and educational programs by Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) staff.

In November, the Alameda County Board of Education, which granted the original charter to New Village, voted to give the struggling school until January 11 to resolve its fiscal, management, and staffing problems. The Board meets to assess the school’s progress tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m., in Room 142 of the Alameda County Office of Education building, at 313 W. Winton Avenue, in Hayward.
