Alameda County Office of Education Celebrates National Techies Day

(Hayward, CA) – The Alameda County Office of Education will participate in a nationwide, grassroots celebration of technology education, taking place on the first-ever National Techies Day on October 5, 1999.

Activities planned for the celebration include the awarding of $2000 grants to 30 teachers who make exemplary use of technology in the classroom. In collaboration with the Bay Area California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP), Superintendent Sheila Jordan will be recognizing teachers from seven Bay Area counties who were nominated by their districts for the awards. Technology futurist Don Rawitsch of Think Interactive will address the awardees in a ceremony at 4:00 p.m. at the Alameda County Office of Education in Hayward.

A vital component of National Techies Day is Techies Day at School. The primary goal of Techies Day at School is to encourage students to pursue technology as a course of study and possible career. Techies Day at School also serves as a spotlight for schools’ accomplishments in technology education.

In recognizing these schools, Superintendent Jordan indicated, "We are proud that so many Bay Area teachers are helping their students understand technology. Education has a vital responsibility to help create a technology-literate society and these teachers are doing just that."

The theme for this kick-off year is "Technology Achievement." The CTAP project felt it was particularly important to honor the achievement of the teachers who are providing leadership in bringing technology into their classrooms. CTAP Regional Director Bonnie Marks indicated that, "Each year we seek to honor teachers who are using technology in innovative ways. We’re excited that the $60,000 we are awarding will be used by the schools to support that innovation." The names of the winning teachers will be posted on the CTAP website www.ctap4.org.
