County Office of Education and AT&T Debut New Show -- "Alameda County Education Today"

September 15, 1999

HAYWARD – Thursday afternoon, at 5:00 p.m., on channel three, AT&T Cable Services (formerly TCI) debuts Alameda County Education Today, a new one-half hour program that features Sheila Jordan, the Superintendent of Schools for Alameda County, discussing East Bay educational issues with area K-12 leaders. The show will appear monthly.

In this first program, Jordan interviews Marlin Foxworth, Superintendent of the Hayward Unified School District, and Laura Alvarenga, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services for Alameda County Schools. The three educators discuss what they are doing to help under-performing schools improve, integrating arts into the curriculum, and how the County Office of Education and Hayward Unified School District are working together to improve student achievement.

Additional showings are scheduled for September 23, October 7, and October 14, all at 5:00 p.m. on channel 3. The show airs in Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and a portion of Castro Valley (south of Highway 580). Alameda County Education Today may also be seen in Union City at the above times on channel 15.

During the show, Jordan discusses goals that are being developed for the Alameda County Office of Education and asks for community comment. Alvarenga explains the impact of the Public Schools Accountability Act on under-performing schools, and Foxworth describes steps his district is taking to help students be more successful.

The Alameda County Office of Education advocates for best practices in teaching and learning; improves teaching quality by providing continuing education for teachers; forms private and public partnerships to develop increased funding for schools; educates students who have needs not served by districts; and helps school districts ensure fiscal stability.
