  • News on WCW's contract in the United Kingdom
By Justin Waine on June 16, 2000

The following is off the newswire, the source have been credited within the piece.

WCW wrestling will continue to be broadcast in the UK once TNT ceases transmission at the end of the month. Starting from July, WCW Nitro and Thunder will both move to TCM (Turner Classic Movies), which is the new Turner Network in the UK available to Sky Digital subscribers only. I can confirm from my conversation with the TNT representative that WCW Nitro and Thunder will begin to be broadcast back to back on Friday nights in July. There will be a 4 hour 'WCW Block' to quote from the TNT rep every Friday night on TCM. WCW Nitro will begin at 9:00pm and WCW Thunder will follow it at 11:00pm and TCM movies will resume airing it's Classic movies following Thunder at 1:00am. All other programs that are currently aired on TNT will not be broadcast on TCM and will be made available to other broadcasters in the UK.

There comes bad news with good news. The bad news is that the current Sky analogue customers will be unable to watch WCW wrestling on UK TV as from July, which has been the case with Digital customers until now. BSkyB are phasing out the old analogue service periodically over the course of the next 18 months and Sky's aim is to have the Sky Analogue service completely defunct by December 2001. So there you have it, the official scoop on WCW's future status in the UK. It's good news as UK fans don't have to miss out. Oh and I nearly forgot. The TNT representative did inform me that Turner Network have high expectations for TCM and will be giving it the focus and attention required in order for it to succeed. TCM do have plans to air LIVE coverage of WCW events later in the year. Now that triggered my memory! Isn't it true that WCW is returning to the UK on Friday, November 10 later this year to stage WCW Nitro? Well I raised this issue and asked whether this event would be broadcast on TCM and the reply was: 'we'll just have to wait and see".
