Mary Maring is a native of the Devils Lake area. She received her juris doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1975. She was the law clerk for the Honorable Bruce C. Stone, Hennepin County District Court, Minneapolis, Minnesota, from 1975 to 1976. From 1976 to 1996, she was in the private practice of law. She is past president of the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association and the East Central District Bar Association. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1996 by Governor Edward Schafer. She was elected in 1996 to serve an unexpired term, and reelected for a full ten-year term in 1998. She and her husband, David, have two children, Chris and Drew.
