EMPLOYEE DAY 2000
WITH THE HURRICANES!

November 4 is Employee Day, where full-time UM employees can get one free ticket and purchase up to four additional tickets for immediate family members for $1 each (with valid UM ID card) to see Ken Dorsey and 'Canes battle it out against Michael Vick and the No. 3-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies in a Big East Showdown. Get your tickets at the Hurricane Ticket Office in the Hecht Athletic Center on the Gables campus, beginning today. The office is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Tickets will also be available from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the following locations: The Breezeway Tuesday and Wednesday, and Oct. 24 and 25, and at the food court of the Rosenstiel Campus Tuesday and Oct. 24. UM WEB, SYSTEMS UNAVAILABLE
DUE TO RENOVATIONS

Due to renovations of the Data Center environmental, the following systems will be unavailable from 6:30-8 a.m. on Oct. 21: Web, e-mail, course websites, name server (DNS). Also, the Central Server that supports all (PIDMS) University Production systems will be unavailable from 6:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. In addition, the Ungar building will be without light, air conditioning and the use of elevators from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

 

UM EVENTS MARK NATIONAL COLLEGIATE
ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK

The UM Center for Alcohol & Other Drug Education and BACCHUS present four days of events dedicated to raising awareness about alcohol and its effects. Today at noon in the UC Lower Lounge, Vice President for Student Affairs Pat Whitely will be on hand to kick off the week of events. Immediately following will be SAFE, a DWI accident reenactment performed by Miami paramedics. At 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Wellness Center, WAR (WoMen Against Rape) will present an informational program with survivor testimonials. On Wednesday, The WAVE Peer Theater Troupe will perform sketches on alcohol-related topics at 7 p.m. in Gusman Hall. For details, call 284-6120.

 

THE WELLNESS CENTER HOSTS
THE 5th ANNUAL WELLNESS EXPO

It's time again open for the fifth annual Wellness Expo at the Wellness Center, from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday. Sample smoothies, enjoy a free chair massage, learn about a variety of health and wellness programs, and enter to win prizes. For more information, call 284-LIFE.

 

VISITING PROFESSOR TO GIVE
TWO PHILOSOPHY LECTURES

Professor of philosophy at the University of Waterloo, Canada, Jan Narveson, will give two lectures at UM: on Thursday in room 120 of the Learning Center, Narveson will speak on The Question of Natural Theology; on Friday in room 180 of the Learning Center, he will give a talk on Justice, Charity, and a Dilemma for Welfare-Statistics. Both talks, which are free and open to everyone, begin at 3:30 p.m. with a coffee reception at 3 p.m. in room 735 of the Ashe Building. For details, call 284-4757.

 

JOIN THE FIGHT
AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Several activities at UM are planned in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

  • The Courtelis Center for Psychosocial Oncology is organizing an all day workshop, Breast Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment: Traditional & Complementary Medicine. The program, which is Oct. 24, is $15 for UM employees and students and $60 for others. It is designed to address a broad range of topics, including early diagnosis & prevention, nutrition, Chinese medicine, psychosocial issues, surgical intervention & current treatments. It may be used for 6.0 contact hours for nurses, social workers and mental health counselors. Non medical personnel are welcome.   • The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center presents Diet & Breast Cancer, a lecture by dietician Kathy Yi from 10-11 a.m. Friday at Sylvester Conference Room 1301.
  • Learn the proper techniques for breast self-examination at a Triple Touch Class, from noon to 1 p.m. or 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. October 25 in the Wellness Center. To RSVP, call 284-LIFE.

 

SCHOOL OF LAW
HOSTS OPEN HOUSE

The Law School is hosting an open house from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday in room E-352 to help prospective students get information about applying, preparing for and succeeding in law school. OPEN ENROLLMENT PACKETS

Be on the lookout: Benefits Open Enrollment packets are in the process of being delivered to your department through next week. Note that the United Healthcare Provider Directory included in your Open Enrollment Packets does not include UM physicians and specialists. The supplemental provider directory that will include these UM physicians and specialists will be mailed in time for the Benefits Fair, Oct. 30, 31 on the Gables Campus, in the Flamingo Ballroom, Nov. 1 at the RSMAS Cafeteria. If yours is not received by the Benefits Fair, you are encouraged to attend the fair to pick one up.

LUNCH, SHOP FOR A GOOD CAUSE:

CORNICHE CAFE BENEFITS UNITED WAY

On Friday, why not lunch and shop at the same time? Try the Corniche Cafe and Bazaar, where both a home-cooked lunch and rummage sale will benefit the United Way. The event, held in the Corniche building, located across from the School of Nursing, will be open from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on Friday. Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door.   • Henry Sapoznik, founder of the Klezmer movement, will speak on The Golden Age of Yiddish Radio from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday at the UM Hillel Jewish Center, 1100 Stanford Drive. Sapoznik's lecture will cover Yiddish radio and include samples of the best Yiddish golden oldies (including Yiddish swing music), Bintl Briefs, philosophy and radio drama.   • The 14th Annual Pumpkin Pursuit, a 5K run or walk around the Gables campus is being held at 8 p.m. Oct. 30. Participants are encouraged to dress in costume, and there will be candy and prizes.   • In celebration of Design + Architecture Day is an exhibition of faculty work now on display in the Architecture School's Gallery in Building 48E, 1223 Dickinson Drive.
