Application Procedure
The University of Miami actively seeks students who demonstrate academic strength, personal integrity, and seriousness of
educational purpose. Admission is selective and is offered to those applicants whose
credentials are academically sound and whose interests, aptitudes, and preparation reflect a
well-rounded secondary school experience, inside and outside the classroom.
The Admission Committee considers each application individually, taking several factors into
consideration before making an admission decision. These factors include academic achievement,
guidance counselor evaluation and teacher recommendations, standardized test scores (SAT I or
ACT), rank in class, special talents, and the applicant's essay.
Applicants to the School of Music and the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Theatre Arts are
required to audition and complete a supplemental application. Typically, admitted students
also have a strong record of extracurricular activity, athletic ability, or community service.
How to Apply
As you have perused this Web Page, no doubt you've noticed that a private education at the
University of Miami is an education with a difference. If you're interested in such an
education, then we encourage you to apply via our Electronic Application. The application
should be completed and submitted before the March 1 regular decision priority
deadline. For early consideration in the awarding of academic scholarships, applicants
should select one of the following early options.
An early decision option is available for well-qualified freshman applicants
whose first choice is the University of Miami. Early decision candidates are encouraged to
file Parts 1 and 2 of the application and all other credentials at the beginning of their
senior year, and no later than November 15. Please note: the University of Miami adheres
to guidelines established by the National Association for College Admission Counseling, which
clearly states that students may apply to other colleges, but may have only one early decision
application pending at any time.
An early action option is available for students seriously considering the
University of Miami, but who also would like to keep their options open to hear from other
schools. Early action candidates should complete and return their application (Parts 1 & 2)
by November 15 of their senior year.
Applicants for admission as freshmen whose applications are completed by March 1
are given priority consideration for admission, scholarships, and financial assistance. These
applicants are advised of an admission decision in early March. Intent to enroll at the
University of Miami must be confirmed with an enrollment deposit by May 1.
Applicants for admission to the Dual Admission Honors Programs must submit the regular
application for admission as well as the specific program application and supporting documents
to the Office of Admission no later than January 15.
Transfer admission may be granted to students who have earned credit from other accredited
colleges or universities, who present a strong cumulative grade point average, and who are in
good standing at the last institution attended. The dean of the school or college in which the
transfer student plans to enroll determines which credits may be counted toward meeting
graduation requirements. The School of Architecture requires a portfolio, and the School of
Music requires an audition of all transfer students.
