Flags The 26th Amendment to the U The 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution made it possible for traditional college-age students to participate in the electoral process by granting 18-year olds the right to vote. Since the ratification of this amendment, the percentage of young voters has continually declined, reaching an all-time low in 1996 with only 32 percent of young voters exercising their rights. However, low voter turnout is not limited to younger voters. Only 54 percent of registered Americans voted in the 1996 election.

To help reverse national voter apathy, the University of Miami is participating in the National Campus Voter Registration Project. Our goal is to give every member of the university community the opportunity to register to vote in the 2000 election.
