United Way 2000 Campaign

University of Miami volunteers helped the United Way of Miami-Dade County kick off the community's United Way 2000 Campaign with "Abracadabra Allapattah," held August 17 at Allapattah Elementary School. More than 90 UM volunteers from all campuses spent the day helping to refurbish both the interior and exterior of the school, and brightening its appearance for the new school year.

UM's United Way 2000 Campaign goal is to substantially surpass last year’s campaign giving, which provided $672,041. The University of Miami is also making increased employee participation a major focus of this year's effort. UM's United Way 2000 Challenge is for every United Way donor to enlist at least one new participant in the United Way campaign. Last year, approximately 62 percent of UM employees got involved, and this year's goal is to garner 100 percent participation across the University.

Jim Norton, left, from Physical Plant and Bob Dale, right, from Facilities Administration, put the final touches on outdoor landscaping improvements. UM faculty and staff came together in strong numbers on August 17 to rejuvenate Allapattah Elementary School before the beginning of a new school year.

Representatives from the Medical Campus tackle repainting the school’s interior and exterior. A new member of the UM community, Josie Romano Brown, Executive Director of Corporate Relations, wasted no time getting into the spirit of United Way.
