AUBURN- Hal Baird began his final season on the plains today with a 6-3 win over Winthrop. Dominic Rich's two-run homer in the seventh inning put Auburn up for good.
Gabe Gross singled and came around to score in the second inning, but Winthrop answered in the third with a pair of runs off three singles and a walk.
Auburn tied the game later that inning when Mailon Kent singled and the Winthrop pitcher, Keith Fawlish, walked three straight batters.
Andrew Slater opened the Auburn fourth with a single and the Tigers moved him all the way home, giving Auburn a 3-2 lead. Off of a run, a hit, and a Dominic Rich error, Winthrop tied it up in the seventh. Rich came to bat in the bottom of the inning and made up for the error with a two-run blast over the centerfield fence. Gross scored his second run of the game later that inning on a Bobby Huddleston single.
Hayden Gliemmo (1-0) got the win for Auburn after working five and one-third innings, allowing five hits and a pair of runs. Brandon Mayfield gave up a hit and a run in his inning and two-thirds pitched. Colter Bean recorded his first save of the season.
Auburn and Winthrop square-off again tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 at Plainsman Park.
