Auburn Starts Season
With Sweep Of Winthrop

AUBURN- Auburn (2-0) finished the sweep of Winthrop (0-2) with a 11-5 win over the Eagles. The Tigers got 11 runs from six different players on only 11 hits.

Mailon KentMailon Kent scored for Auburn in the first inning on an infield error by Winthrop.

In the third inning, Auburn's Bobby Huddleston singled in Dominic Rich and John Tyler who had both reached on walks.

Auburn scored three runs in the fourth inning on two errors by the Eagles and a Dominic Rich double.

Winthrop got on the board in the fifth inning with two runs on RBI singles by Luc Riopel and Todd Leathers. But Auburn came back and a run of their own with a Todd Faulkner homerun.

In the sixth inning, Dominic Rich led off with his second homerun of the year with a blast to left center.

Auburn wrapped up their scoring by adding three runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Gabe Gross scored on Jonathan Schuerholz's getting hit by a pitch and Chris Beaird then singled in two more runs to cap off a 11 point output for the Tigers.

Winthrop added three more runs in the ninth on four hits.

Chris Bootcheck (1-0) got the win for Auburn after working four and one-third innings, allowing seven hits and a pair of earned runs. In relief, Kevin Knorst gave up two hits and no earned runs in two and two-thirds innings, and Lavale Speigner pitched two innings giving up three earned runs on five hits.

Auburn travels to Birmingham to face off with Samford University on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 3:00 pm.
