February 9, 2000

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The 11th-ranked Auburn Tigers retired the final 17 batters as the Tigers defeated UAB, 6-0, at Young Memorial Field. Junior LHP Hayden Gliemmo (1-0) picked up the victory, as the Tigers upped their record to 4-0 while the Blazers dropped to 0-1.

Gliemmo had a solid outing pitching five innings, allowing no runs with four strikeouts. Gliemmo teamed with seniors Brandon Mayfield and Colter Bean to thro a two-hit shutout.

"This was by far and away our most solid effort to date," Head coach Hal Baird said. "Gliemmo, Mayfield, and Bean were on top of their games and we received some great defensive play, especially from Dominic Rich."

Auburn opened up the scoring in the top of the first when sophomore John Tyler scored on Gabe Gross' single to left field. Two batters later, Faulkner doubled scoring Gross.

The Tigers broke the game open with four runs in the seventh inning, sparked by Faulkner's second double of the day. After Faulkner knocked in Dominic Rich from second base, Gliemmo doubled scoring Faulkner. Gliemmo's hit stretched his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Faulkner had three hits on the day, including two doubles and two RBIs. Tyler, Gross, Rich, and Greg Brazier each had two hits.

UAB's Michael Stallings dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Auburn returns to action this weekend when they host Furman in a three-game set Friday through Sunday at Plainsman Park. Friday's action will begin at 3 pm.
