NEW ORLEANS, LA.- No. 7 Auburn fell to the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide, 7-2, in the final day of the Winn Dixie Showdown, today. Auburn fell to 10-2 overall, while Alabama improved to 4-3.
Auburn scored their lone runs in the eighth and ninth innings. After Dominic Rich and Gabe Gross led off the
eighth with two singles, Todd Faulkner then grounded into a double play, scoring Rich from third.
With two outs in the ninth, a double by Heath Higgins and a single from Jonathan Schuerholz left runners at the
corners. Mailon Kent's single to right field scored Higgins before Rich popped out to end the game.
"They outplayed us in every area," head coach Hal Baird. "I thought we'd score more runs, but we didn't get
anything against their pitching."
Alabama scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, to take a 6-0 advantage. The Crimson Tide picked up
another run in the seventh.
"I though Brent (Speigner) had a good outing for us today," Baird said.
Though Speigner (3-1) picked up the loss, he went 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, while walking four
and striking out four.
Gross and Rich each had two hits for the Tigers. Gross doubled in the first and singled in the eighth, while Rich
tripled in the fifth and singled in the eighth. Catcher Bobby Huddleston had Auburn's other lone hit.
Kevin Marzion picked up the win for the Crimson Tide (1-1), who had 10 hits on the day.
The Tigers return home to play Oakland on Tuesday and South Alabama on Wednesday. Both contests at Plainsman Park will begin at 3 p.m. CT.
