AUBURN- No. 11 Auburn baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and beat VCU, 7-6. The Tigers remain undefeated at home this season and improve to 13-2 overall.
Auburn's Mailon Kent ended the day with 2 RBI on 3-for-5 hitting including a solo homerun over the green monster in left field. Todd Faulkner went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, Dominic Rich went 3-for-5 with a double and 1 RBI.
Chris Bootcheck started the game for Auburn, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits, five strikeouts and two walks. Jacob Sumners replaced Bootcheck in the seventh inning and gave up three earned runs on two hits before Brandon Mayfield was called upon to pitch the last 2.2 innings. Mayfield gave up no runs on four hits and one stikeout to pick up his second win of the season.
VCU scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead over Auburn.
The Tigers came back in the second inning to score three runs. The highlight of the inning was Todd Faulkner's RBI double to score Gabe Gross.
Auburn scored another run in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead over the Rams on Mailon Kent's solo homerun.
VCU came back and scored four runs over three innings to take control of the game, 6-4.
In the seventh inning, the Tigers picked up a run to bring the score to 6-5.
Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, Auburn's Mailon Kent hit a single to right field to score Dominic Rich to put the Tigers up for good.
Auburn continues the series with VCU tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2 pm. Freshman Brent Speigner (3-1) is expected to start for Auburn.
