AUBURN- The Auburn baseball team, for the second game in a row, had to come back in the eighth inning to score a victory over the VCU Rams. The Tigers were down 6-3 to VCU, but scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and beat the Rams, 11-6. The Tigers improve to 14-2 overall, while VCU falls to 8-3.
Auburn's Chris Beaird ended the day with 2 RBI on 3-for-4 hitting. Todd Faulkner went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Dominic Rich went 1-for-5 with 2 RBI.
Auburn starter Brent Speigner had a strong performance to give the bullpen the rest it needed, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on ten hits, three strikeouts, and two walks. Colter Bean replaced Speigner in the seventh inning. Bean gave up two earned runs on six hits, three stikeouts, and one walk to pick up the win.
VCU scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead over Auburn.
The Tigers did not score until the fifth inning picking up two runs on Dominic Rich's single to score Jonathan Schuerholz and Chris Beaird.
Auburn tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning on Beaird's single to right field to score Bobby Huddleston.
VCU came back and scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings, to take a 6-3 lead over the Tigers.
That's when Auburn exploded for eight runs the bottom of the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Heath Higgins tripled down the right-field line to score Rich. Then, Todd Faulkner singled to center-field to score two runs. Huddleston, Beaird, and Schuerholz each knocked in a run to put Auburn ahead 11-6 over the Rams.
Auburn wraps up the series with VCU tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:20 pm. Freshman Levale Speigner (0-0) is expected to start for Auburn.
