AUBURN- No. 9 South Carolina used a six-run eighth inning to defeat No. 6 Auburn, 10-9, in the second game of the weekend series. South Carolina improved to 18-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC, while the Tigers fell to 19-5 on the season and 0-2 in SEC play.
Auburn led the Gamecocks 5-4, going into the eighth inning. South Carolina rallied for six runs in the eighth to take a 10-5 lead over the Tigers. With a Todd Faulkner three-run homerun, Auburn pulled to within 10-8. The Tigers held in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Auburn was able to pick up only one more run and fall 10-9 to the Gamecocks.
First baseman Todd Faulkner picked up another homerun with a shot to right centerfield. Todd went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs including the homerun. Shortstop Jonathon Schuerholz also chipped in 4 RBI on 3-for-5 hitting including a double.
Chris Bootcheck got the start for the Tigers, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits, eight strikeouts and three walks. Auburn was forced to use Jacob Sumners, Kyle Hudlow, Brandon Mayfield and Kevin Knorst out of the bullpen in the remaining three innings. Sumners picked up the loss for the Tigers.
