AUBURN- Ninth-ranked South Carolina scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to come from behind to defeat sixth-ranked Auburn, 8-7, today. The Gamecocks, which swept the series, improved to 19-0 and 3-0 in the SEC, while the Tigers fell to 19-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Trailing 4-0, Auburn rallied with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth before junior first baseman Todd Faulkner hit a grand slam home run in the seventh, giving the Tigers a 7-4 advantage. Faulkner's homer was his 12th of the season.
South Carolina responded in the eighth as the Gamecocks scored four runs behind the bat of second baseman John McHenry. McHenry belted a three-run home run, giving USC an 8-7 lead.
Clint Collins (1-0) was credited with the win for the Gamecocks. Collins pitched three innings, allowing two hits, while striking out one. Auburn's Colter Bean (4-1), starting just his second game in his career, gave a gutsy effort for the Tigers, throwing a career-high nine innings.
McHenry finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI for the Gamecocks.
Designated hitter Chris Beaird was 3-for-4 for the Tigers, while shortstop Jonathan Schuerholz and center fielder Mailon Kent each had two hits.
The Tigers will host Liberty on Tuesday in a non-conference game before traveling to Arkansas for a weekend series with the Razorbacks. Tuesday's game at Plainsman Park will begin at 3 p.m. CT. Former Auburn great Bo Jackson will throw out the first pitch at Tuesday's game.
