AUBURN- First baseman Todd Faulkner hit his 16th home run of the
year and left-handed pitcher Hayden Gliemmo made his first start since
Feb. 18, as 11th-ranked Auburn defeated Samford, 10-4, tonight. Auburn
improved to 31-10 overall, while Samford fell to 16-21.
Gliemmo, sidelined with a ulner collateral ligament sprain since
mid-February, started his first game since February 18 at Tulane. The
junior, on a strict pitch count, threw 31 pitches allowing four hits and
no runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Auburn jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning before
Samford rallied for a four spot in the fifth, cutting the Tigers'
advantage to one run. Dominic Rich's two-run single sparked the Tigers'
three-run fourth.
The Tigers scored three more in the sixth, behind Faulkner's
two-out two-run single to center field. Auburn's next batter, Brett
Burnham, singled home Gabe Gross for the Tigers third run of the
inning.
Auburn scored an insurance run in the seventh and scored another
in the eighth on Faulkner's homer. Faulkner ended the night with three
RBI and now has 77 on the season.
Rich was 3-for-4 for Auburn, with two runs and three RBI.
Freshman Levale Speigner (1-2) was credited with his first
career victory. Speigner threw two innings of hitless ball in relief.
Samford's Beau Anderson (2-6) picked up the loss for the
Bulldogs, allowing five runs, three earned and five hits in 3.0 innings.
Major Allred added three hits for Samford.
Auburn returns to Southeastern Conference play this weekend when
it travels to Tennessee for a three-game set with the Volunteers.
