AUBURN- Auburn starter Chris Bootcheck allowed one run over
eight innings and Todd Faulkner broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with his
18th home run of the season, as the eighth-ranked Tigers downed
Vanderbilt, 5-1, tonight. With the win, Auburn improved to 35-10
overall and 12-7 in the Southeastern Conference, while the Commodores
dropped to 18-22 and 4-14 in conference play.
Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the third as Kevin Geshke scored
from second base on Ashley Freeman's double down the left field line.
Auburn tied the game in the fourth when Brett Burnham grounded into a
double play, scoring Gabe Gross from third base.
Faulkner broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth with his
homer over the left field green monster, extending the junior's
career-best hitting streak to 17 games.
The Tigers added three insurance runs in the eighth, as catcher
Donnie Streeter's two-out double to left field scored Burnham and Hayden
Gliemmo. Burnham reached on a two-out error by Vanderbilt shortstop
Ulises Cabrera and Gliemmo singled to right field. Streeter scored from
second on John Tyler's single.
The victory was Auburn's 15th in a row over Vanderbilt dating
back to 1991, and the Tigers fourth-straight conference win.
Bootcheck improved to 9-0 on the season, scattering four hits
and one run, while striking out eight and walking two. Vanderbilt's
Andy Beal (2-8) was credited with the loss in 7.2 innings of work,
allowing eight hits, five runs, two earned runs and seven strikeouts.
Mailon Kent was 2-for-4 on the day, improving his team-best
hitting streak to a career high 21 games.
The Tigers and Commodores will play the second game of their
