Auburn Falls To Vanderbilt, 9-8

AUBURN- Vanderbilt pounded out 17 hits including three each from Ulises Cabrera, Sean Luellwitz, and Scott Vanderhoff, as the Commodores defeated eighth-ranked Auburn, 9-8, before a season-high crowd of 3,627 at Plainsman Park, today. The win snapped the Commodore's 15-game losing streak to the Tigers. Vanderbilt improved to 19-22 overall and 5-14 in the SEC, while Auburn dropped to 35-11 and 12-8 in the conference.

Vanderbilt withstood two Auburn rallies, including one in the sixth and one in the ninth to hold on for the victory. The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at seven, and managed only one run with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth.

The Commodores broke open a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning on Adam Blue's three-run home run. Vanderbilt took a 7-2 lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits and a pair of Auburn errors.

Auburn's four-run sixth was capped by a two-run home run by Dominic Rich and Brett Burnham's sacrifice fly scoring Gabe Gross to tie the game at seven.

The guests took the lead for good in the seventh on two consecutive two-out doubles by John Prothro and Scott Vanderhoff.

Vanderbilt's Jeff Little (4-2) picked up the win in 3.1 innings of relief. Little allowed one run on no hits, while walking three and striking out two.

The Tigers' Brent Speigner (4-4) was credited with the loss for Auburn, surrendering two runs on three hits.

Mailon Kent and Todd Faulkner each extended their career-best hitting streaks to 22 and 18, respectively for Auburn, while reliever Colter Bean set the school record with his 98th career appearance.
