HOOVER, Ala.- Florida scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 7-2 win over Auburn in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament at the Hoover Met. Auburn fell to 40-17 while Florida improved to 39-20.
Florida scored six runs in the first inning courtesy of three RBI singles by Kurt Keene, Tim Olson and Tony Socarras. The Gators tallied four hits in the inning while Auburn committed two errors.
Bobby Huddleston put Auburn on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. Huddleston's homer was his second of the season. Auburn added another run in the eighth on Todd Faulkner's ground out scoring Mailon Kent from third. Faulkner's RBI was his 96th of the season, establishing a new Auburn single-season record.
Smalley (6-7) was credited with the victory after allowing one run on three hits in 7.0 innings. Eddie Rojas gave up two hits and a run in 2.0 innings of relief for the Gators. Auburn's five hits and two runs tied season lows.
"That is the second time that Mike Smalley has been effective against us," head coach Hal Baird said. "He has done a good job against our hitters. We didn't have any loud outs tonight."
Tiger starter Levale Speigner (2-3) picked up the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits in 1.2 innings. Brent Speigner threw a career-high 6.1 innings of relief for Auburn, giving up only two hits and striking out four.
Auburn will play the loser of the South Carolina-Kentucky game, tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
