Auburn Football Practice Report

September 4, 2000

AUBURN- Although it was the Labor Day holiday, Auburn went to work with two practices in warm, humid conditions Monday. The Tigers continued to concentrate on implementing the game plan for Saturday's SEC opener at Ole Miss.

Defensive coordinator John Lovett, who met with the media after practice, said that Ole Miss' running game has been one of the focal points of Auburn's defensive preparation.

"We have to take care of their running game," Lovett explained. "They have two really good running backs in Deuce McAllister and Joe Gunn. They have another player in the backfield that is a little more unheralded, Charles Stackhouse and he is carrying the ball a lot more this year than he has in the past. Of course, as far as throwing the football, Romaro Miller is as good of a quarterback as we will see this season."

McAllister rushed nine times for 29 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 52 yards and a score in a 49-20 win over Tulane. Gunn and Stackhouse combined for 24 yards while Miller threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

Auburn will practice once for the next three days before traveling to Oxford Friday. All practices are closed to the public.

The Tigers, who are 34-27-5 in SEC openers, face Ole Miss at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) in a game televised by ESPN2.
