AUBURN- The 25th ranked Auburn gymnastics team fell to the 22th ranked Florida Gators
193.675-192.750, in front of 1,778 fans in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum Friday night. Junior
Sally Cantrell won the all-around with a season-high 38.875 and freshman Cheryl Lancaster won
the beam with a 9.925, which is the second highest score in school history. Lancaster also set
new career-highs on all three events she competed on. Senior Sarah Wentworth tied for first
overall on the floor with a 9.825.
The Tigers fell behind after the first rotation 48.275-48.250, despite Auburn scoring a season-high on vault. Lancaster and Cantrell each scored a 9.675, a career-high and season-high, respectively.
After the second rotation the Tigers vaulted ahead of the Gators 97.150-96.725 courtesy of a 48.900 on bars, which is the fifth highest score in school history. Wentworth scored a 9.950 which was first overall in the meet, and is the second highest in school history. Lancaster scored a career-high 9.850, and sophomore Lori Bernia posted a 9.775.
On the do-or-die event of beam the Tigers struggled for the second meet in a row. Auburn had to count two falls yielding a team score of 48.025. Lancaster led the team with her 9.925, followed closed behind by Cantrell with a 9.900.
With the Gators leading 145.500-145.175 going into the final rotation the Tigers would have to compete strong on floor. However, Auburn posted its lowest score of the season with a 47.575. Wentworth led the way with a 9.825, which tied for first overall. Freshman Mary Nell Pate scored a 9.800, which was the second highest score in the meet.
The Tigers return to action next Friday against Illinois State in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. (CST).
