Auburn Defeats Centenary And Southeast Missouri State With A Score Of 194.100, Cantrell Wins All-Around

AUBURN- On "Senior Night" for Auburn Gymnastics only one senior competed, but you couldn't tell by the score. The Tigers (4-8) finished first out of three teams Saturday night in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum with a score of 194.100, Southeast Missouri State finished second, 190.200, and Centenary finished third with a 185.850.

Junior Sally Cantrell won the all-around for the second-consecutive meet scoring a 39.175, scoring a career-high 9.800 on floor and a team-high 9.875 on bars. Freshman Mary Nell Pate finished second with a career-high 38.450.

Cantrell and freshman Cheryl Lancaster tied for first on bars, 9.875, and beam with a 9.850.

The Tigers started off slow on the vault scoring a 47.950 just .005 behind SEMO's 48.000. Pate led the Tigers with a career-high 9.725 to finish second in the meet, Cantrell followed close behind with a 9.650.

Auburn rebounded on bars despite not having the nations second-ranked gymnast on bars Sarah Wentworth in the lineup. Cantrell and Lancaster led the charge each scoring a 9.875 towards the team total of 48.850. Lori Bernia and Pate each scored a 9.725 and Missy Lauderdale scored a 9.650 in her first ever collegiate bar routine.

On beam the Tigers counted a fall, but recovered well scoring a 48.425, the highest beam total of the night. Cantrell and Lancaster's 9.850 led the way followed by a 9.800 for Jennifer Ross and a 9.750 from Jill Redding.

The Tigers highest total on the night came on floor where they scored a 48.875, compared to 45.200 for Centenary and 46.400 for SEMO. Jennifer Ross won the event for the second-consecutive week with a 9.850. Pate and Cantrell rounded out the top three with a 9.825 and 9.800, respectively. Auburn had six of the top seven floor scores, Stephani Janes added a 9.725 and Terri Brannan had a 9.575.

Auburn travels to Gainesville, Fla. next Thursday for the SEC Championships which will be held next Saturday night March 18. Auburn will be looking for its first finish other than sixth since 1994. The meet will be live at www.gatorzone.com.
