August 21, 2000

SPRINGFIELD, N.J.- Auburn junior All-American Kevin Haefner fired a 2-under 69 and is tied for fourth place in the 312-player U.S. Amateur field at the par-71, 6887-yard Baltusrol Golf Club Upper Course in Springfield, N.J., Monday.

The Pittsford, N.Y., native made five birdies and three bogeys and trails leader Lucas Glover of Clemson by two shots. Virginia's James Driscoll is in second with a 3-under 68 while Haefner is tied with 1999 NCAA Champion Luke Donald of Northwestern, Nick Watney, Brian Pool and Jim Salinetti.

"I am pleased with the way the I played," Haefner said. "Making five birdies was great, but I didn't do as well as I should have on the par-5s. I was 1-over par on the three par-5s, and I look to improve on that Tuesday. Overall, though, I am happy about my position."

Haefner made two consecutive birdies on the par-4 second hole and par-3 third before bogeying the par-4 fifth and par-5 eighth. He birdied the par-4 ninth hole to turn at 1-under 34. Two consecutive birdies came on the par-3 15th hole and par-4 16thbefore bogeying the par-4 18th.

Haefner tees off in Tuesday's second and final round of qualifying for match play at 6:43 am Central on the #10 tee with Clay Long and Henry Liaw.

The 312-player field will be reduced to the lowest 64 scorers after Tuesday. The low 64 will advance to match play and all matches are 18 holes except the 36-hole final match Sunday.

The U.S. Amateur will have 13 hours of live national coverage on ESPN and NBC Wednesday through Sunday. ESPN will air from 2-5 pm Central Wednesday, Thursday and Friday while NBC has coverage Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 pm.
