AUBURN- The 22nd ranked Auburn men's tennis team defeated 26th ranked
South Carolina, 6-1, in the first SEC conference match for each team Monday afternoon at the
Luther Young Tennis Center. The Tigers improve to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC, while the
Gamecocks dropped to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
"We did a good job today in getting our first SEC win," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "We beat a strong team and sent out a message that we are for real. We were prepared and ready to play today."
Auburn began the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the point. On court one Stephen Huss and Mark Kovacs defeated Guillaume Legat and Robert Steckley 8-4. The win was the 84th doubles win of Huss' career. He is now only five wins away from the all time career doubles victories record at Auburn.
The Tigers won five of the six singles matches with upset wins on courts one and two by Georges Matijasevic and Huss. No. 66 ranked Matijasevic defeated no. 55 Robert Steckley in three sets after losing the first set. No. 95 ranked Stephen Huss defeated no. 81 Jerome Jourdon in straight sets.
The Tigers next match is Thursday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. against Georgia, the defending national champions, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
