AUBURN- The 25th-ranked Auburn gymnastics team will travel to Kentucky for a Friday night
SEC showdown. Kentucky is the only SEC team that Auburn defeated last year. The Tigers beat
the Wildcats 193.300-191.825 at the Region IV Regionals. Senior Sarah Wentworth propelled
herself into the number one ranking on beam in the region with a 9.875 against Alabama last
weekend.
As a team Auburn dropped from 14th to 25th overall in the polls, but is still ahead of last years pace. Last season the Tigers averaged 191.350 after two meets, and after two meets this season they have posted a 192.200 average. Auburn is ranked eighth in the nation on beam and is tied for 13th on bars.
Freshman Cheryl Lancaster joins Wentworth as the only other Tiger ranked nationally. Lancaster is currently 23rd on beam after a career-high 9.850 performance against Alabama. Wentworth is tied for 17th in the all-around and is 11th on beam in the nation.
The Tigers hold down five top 10 spots in the region. Wentworth is first on beam, second in the all-around and tied for ninth on bars. Lancaster is tied for fourth on bars and junior Sally Cantrell is sixth in the all-around.
Fox Sports South will televise Friday's meet on a tape delay basis. The meet will be re-shown Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. (CST). Darron Sutton and Lori Strong-Ballard will provide the commentary for the meet.
