AUBURN- Auburn's soccer team set the school record for goals in a match by defeating Alabama A&M 11-0 in the season-opener
on Friday afternoon at the AU Soccer Complex.
"It's nice to get the first win under our belt," said second-year head coach Karen Richter. "We need to build on
our success today in the future."
Nine different AU players scored goals, including the first career hat trick for junior Tammy Waine. Waine scored two of
her goals in a 15 second span in the first half.
The Tigers (1-0) scored eight goals in the first half alone and did not allow Alabama A&M (0-1) a shot until late in the
second half.
Auburn managed 34 shots in the game and Bulldog goalkeeper Jennifer Slaton collected 10 saves.
Freshman Kellie Evans led Auburn with three assists and one goal. Niki Schier and Erika Schansberg added two assists and a
goal each. Also scoring goals for Auburn was Sarah Stroud, Carly Thomas, Kacy Murray, Lindsay Hawkins and Adrienne Prosch.
Three AU goalies shared time in the net. Freshman Joell Giger got the start and did not see a shot. Fellow freshman Leslie
Schoeplein also did not see a shot, while sophomore Teresa Campioli collected one save in the second half.
Auburn's previous high for goals in a game was nine against Brewton Parker in 1993. The Tigers also set school records for
assists in a match and points in a match with 14 assists and 36 points. The previous school marks were 8 assists and 22
points.
The Tigers will host Nicholls State on Sunday at the AU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.
