September 1, 2000

AUBURN- Junior Tammy Waine recorded her second hat trick of the young season by leading the Auburn soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Charlotte in double overtime in the opening game of the 2000 Clemson/Nike Tournament on Friday.

Waine scored the game winner with a little over two minutes left in the second overtime to give the Tigers (3-0-0) the best start in school history. Waine put the ball in the lower left-hand side of the net past a diving Jennifer Howell to win the match. Howell, Charlotte's goalkeeper finished the match with seven saves. Auburn previous best start to a season was 2-0-1 to open the 1997 season.

"You have got to give all the credit to Tammy Waine," said AU head coach Karen Richter. "She has given 110 percent effort so far this season and it has showed."

Auburn jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 1-0 at halftime. Waine scored in the eighth minute to give AU the lead, then scored again in the 53rd minute to put the Tigers up 2-0. She has eight goals this season in three matches to equal her total for all of last season.

Charlotte then scored two quick second half goals. Jill Currie and Jennie Leeder scored the 49ers goals.

"The youth on this team was able to stay focus after we gave up the two quick goals," said Richter. "We were able to come back and score to win the game with three minutes left."

Freshman Joell Giger picked up the win in goal for Auburn. The freshman recorded 12 saves, including three in overtime.

Kellie Evans recorded her seventh assist of the season on Waine's first goal, while Niki Schier and Lindsey Hawkins assisted on the game-winner.

Auburn will play Dayton at 11 a.m. CDT on Sunday in the final day of the Tournament. Dayton played host Clemson on Friday night. Charlotte will play Clemson on Sunday.
