BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Auburn's soccer team used three first-half goals to get past UTEP Friday in the opening match of the UAB Tournament at West Campus Field.
Lindsey Hawkins put Auburn (4-1-0) up with a goal in the ninth minute. Hawkins put in a cross from Tammy Waine from the left side. Ginger Sellick also assisted on the goal. Sandra Carnes put the Tigers up 2-0 in the 30th minute with an assist from Magan Stam.
Niki Schier added the third goal in the 44th minute to give Auburn a 3-1 lead at the break.
UTEP (0-4-0) fought back with a first-half goal by Stacy Bekkering in the 36th minute and then cut the lead to one goal with a successful penalty kick by Kelly Parker in the 51st minute.
Candace Cagle added an insurance goal with two seconds on the clock with a shot from about 25 yards out.
Joell Giger improved to 4-0-0 on the season in goal for the Tigers with six saves.
Host UAB played Marquette on Friday night in the second match of the tournament. Sunday Auburn will battle Marquette in Birmingham at 1 p.m., while UAB hosts UTEP at 11 a.m. Marquette is ranked No. 3 in the regional rankings.
