BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Auburn's soccer team upset No. 23-ranked Marquette, 3-1, to win the 2000 UAB/Nike Classic on Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field.
The win was Auburn's first over a nationally ranked team since the Tigers defeated No. 15 Kentucky in 1996. The Tigers at 5-1-0 are off to the best start in school history. AU started the 1997 season 4-1-1.
"It took a total team effort today to beat a quality team like Marquette," said head coach Karen Richter. "We played hard as a team for 90 minutes."
Tammy Waine, the Classic's Most Valuable Player, gave Auburn (5-1-0) the lead with her ninth goal of the season in the 14th minute and the Tigers did not look back. Waine blasted an unassisted shot from 20 yards out and put it off the crossbar and into the goal. She also scored her 10th goal of the year in the 64th minute to AU a 2-0 lead. Megan Stam and Kristen Lindsay assisted on her second goal.
Freshman Ashley Bast scored her first career goal on a header off a corner kick by Stam in the 71st minute that gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Marquette (4-1-0) added a goal in the 79th minute to end the shutout opportunity.
Joell Giger recorded four saves to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Ginger Sellick, Erin Hinson and Adrienne Prosch joined Waine on the Classic's All-Tournament team.
